Crazy Legs2015

The closure of legendary roller skating institutions The Roxy and Empire Roller Skating Rink in 2007 left a void in viable roller skating venues and appeared to signal the end of the roller skating era in New York City.

Recognizing the need for a space for New York City's roller skaters, renowned dancer and skater Lezly Ziering formed a relationship with a Salvation Army Community Center in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. Ziering rents the Salvation Army's large gymnasium weekly on Wednesdays for a night that has come to be known as "Crazy Legs".

A potpourri of skaters young and not-so-young traveling from across the 5 boroughs arrive at the gymnasium at 8PM and can skate until midnight. On any given Wednesday first time skaters mingle with 40 year veterans.

Operating since 2008, Ziering notes that interest and ridership at Crazy Legs has steadily increased, giving pause to the notion that the roller skating era in New York City has come to pass.

This project is on-going.
